CBD and Skincare
CBD oil has become so popular that it is safe to say you can find it pretty much anywhere and in any form or presentation, you can think of. Now, it has taken over the skincare industry as well. From CBD masks, serums, and chapsticks, to CBD based creams, sunscreens and cleansers, there are infinite types of over-the-counter CBD products in beauty supply stores everywhere around the country.
The global CBD cosmetics market is valued at over $580 million, and the United States has a very strong presence in it. Expected to hit $1.7 billion by 2025, the CBD trend is not going away anytime soon. If you’re considering becoming one of the many CBD based skincare fanatics, here is everything you need to know about this industry and how it can help your skin.
What is CBD Oil?
CBD oil is a natural ingredient derived from the Cannabis sativa industrial cannabis species. It has many positive effects on the human body; it has so many that it is probably impossible to name them all.
Cannabidiol or CBD is the non-intoxicating component of marijuana or hemp plants, extracted as a powder, and commonly consumed as an oil enhancing its application and effectiveness.
You have probably heard of CBD before. It is considered to relieve insomnia and chronic pain, and to help relieve autoimmune diseases, anxiety, and depression. CBD products are also a popular natural remedy against insomnia and it helps boost the immune system.
CBD doesn’t have tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) content, meaning it lacks the mind-altering properties of marijuana. CBD oil is not the same thing as hemp seed oil, even though it is another great ingredient for skin, CBD oil is richly concentrated in cannabidiol.
Why is CBD used in skincare products?
CBD is well-known for its healing properties, its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits are highly praised and considered to be beneficial in treating skin concerns like inflammation, dryness, and acne, since it helps reduce the production of sebum, in the skin.
As its most commented benefits, it reduces inflammation, regulates oil production, and neutralizes free radical damage. It could be effective in treating eczema and psoriasis too.
It is recommended for those with inflamed, compromised skin and as sensitive and dry skin types, and also known to help with aging skin.
CBD for Acne
Acne is an inflammatory condition. And even though multiple factors trigger it, any product you apply to your skin that is safe and reduces inflammation is likely to visibly reduce breakouts.
Research shows that CBD oil has the potential to decrease excess sebum production, that is also known to cause acne
CBD Oil for Wrinkles
CBD oil has antioxidant properties, no shock, it comes from a plant. These antioxidants help decrease the visible signs of aging, aka wrinkles or skin dullness.
CBD Oil for Sensitive Skin
CBD oil has been found to have significant soothing properties and can help minimize issues related to skin sensitivity, including redness and reactivity.
CBD for Eczema
CBD helps combat irritation and inflammation caused by eczema, along with chronic skin conditions such as psoriasis and dermatitis
CBD for Hydration
Thanks to CBD’s moisturizing properties, including it in your skincare routine can help combat dehydration and dryness.
Disclaimer, we understand the hype because CBD is pretty great, but don’t believe everything you read. It is still one of the many ingredients that help your skin to feel and look better, the main difference between other ingredients and CBD is: CBD oils got really popular
Is CBD in skincare products safe for my skin?
CBD based products in your skincare should be pretty safe for your skin, if you happen to have a reaction from a CBD topical product, it’s likely not from the CBD itself, but some other ingredient.
When choosing your skincare products that contain CBD, remember the CBD works well with additives that calm and nourish the skin barrier, like ceramides, hyaluronic acid, peptides, and niacinamides. Try to avoid CBD skin products that contain alcohol, as this can combat its beneficial effects and heighten inflammatory skin conditions.
The CBD skin products industry is still an unregulated industry, so you should be careful in the products you purchase and always use brands that are honest about the ingredients of their product since, on many occasions, some can be very insincere of whether their CBD based products contain actual CBD or not.
Is it legal to purchase CBD oil products in all 50 states?
CBD is now legal at the federal level. CBD products can be grown and sold in the vast majority of US states, and that includes all the skincare and beauty products that contain CBD, too.
According to the 2018 Farm Bill, cannabinoids derived from industrial hemp, containing less than 0.3% THC, are legal, so you can legally purchase CDB skin products everywhere in the United States.
What side effects can CBD based skincare products have?
First off, it won’t get you high. Now seriously talking, CBD has no known side effects, but many specialists and doctors agree that there isn’t enough research out there about it for most dermatologists to recommend CBD products
CBD products are not the only products one with that issue, many star ingredients suffer from the same lack of research and still are over-the-counter products as well
What to Look For in your CBD Skin Care
There are many CBD skin care products available, and if you are interested in finding the best CBD oil, here are some tips for choosing the best CBD product for your skin :
- Make sure the ingredient list states cannabidiol. Hemp seed oil or extract is not the same as CBD oil. For products claiming to contain CBD, the FDA stated that the name that should be on the ingredient label is cannabidiol, when ingredient labels say things like CBD-enriched hemp seed oil, it probably doesn’t have any CBD oil
- A good indicator that the CBD product is legitimate is when the brand lists the total cannabidiol content in milligrams,
- Look for third-party certification on the purity and stated amount of the CBD to be sure you’re getting what the label claims.
- Avoid jars, clear bottles, or any packing that exposes the product to a lot of light or air, it causes it to become less effective.
